Mentoring

A Hand to Guide Me
The BGCA tag teamed with our national partner, Big Brothers and Big Sisters in an effort to start a BGCA mentoring program.

WHY MENTORING?
National research has shown that positive relationships between youth and mentors have a direct and measurable impact on children's lives.
By participating in our youth mentoring programs, youth are:
  • More confident in their schoolwork performance
  • Able to get along better with their families
  • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
  • 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
  • 52% less likely to skip school

From a youth development standpoint, we have seen an amazing transformation from our kids that have mentors in their social abilities, their grades, and their discipline issues at the Club. Mentoring is near the top of the list as far as programs that we offer and change lives.
WHAT IF I WANT TO BE A MENTOR?
  • Potential mentors are required to fill out a volunteer application (available on homepage) to allow the Club to perform a background check.
  • Mentors will then schedule a training session. The training session will last about two hours.
  • At the conclusion of the training, the mentor will fill out an "interest sheet" that will allow us to match them to a mentee.
  • Matching takes approximately 10 days.
