WHAT IS THIS?
Basically, it is the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Big Pines extension program after a Red Bull! It is after school enrichment that will include an educational and homework component, a social component, and an enrichment component, a parental component, and a preventative component.
WHAT ARE ALL THESE "COMPONENTS”?
They are just parts that make up the entire program.
Educational component - homework help or interventions (such as reading help)
Social component - run around time, free play, and organized games with their friends
Enrichment component - New experiences for the kids such as cooking or Tae kwon do
Parental component - there will be opportunities for parents to be involved with their child’s development through this program
Preventative component - to include Boys & Girls Club award –winning programming, such as Smart Moves, Power Hour, or Triple Play
WHAT ELSE IS INCLUDED?
The kids will get something to eat as well as transportation home via MISD school bus at 6pm. The kids will enjoy full membership of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Big Pines . This will mean that on school in-service days or holidays, members would be able to attend the Carlile (main) Unit.
WHERE WILL THESE BE?
In the Marshall ISD, these enhanced Boys & Girls Clubs extensions will be in each elementary school (Carver, Crockett, JH Moore, Lee, South Marshall, and Travis) and in the two middle schools (Price T Young and Sam Houston). Because we will be in these schools, transportation to the Club will NOT be provided. Transportation will still be provided from Marshall Junior High School.
WHEN DOES IT START?
It will start on the first day of school, Monday August 22. Transportation home will not begin until September 6. Each day the program will be from 3pm - 6pm.
HOW DID YOU GET THIS?
The MISD and the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Big Pines received a 21st Century Grant. This is a partnership grant between a school district and a local, established entity like the Boys & Girls Clubs in an effort to provide afterschool enrichment. The grant is a $2.5 million dollar reimbursement grant. This means that we do not actually see the money transferred into our bank account, but we incur no costs to implement the program. For the Club it is a break-even proposition. We think that this could be transformative for our MISD kids, but we still need our donors.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE MAIN UNIT?
We will still be here at the Carlile Unit. We will still serve the younger kids that don’t stay at their schools, but noting that there is not a Texas ACE learning center at the Jr. High and Marshall High School, the Carlile Unit will have programming meant to attract and enrich our teens. We will focus on high school graduation, career and job skills, and life after high school, whether that is college, trade school, technical school, or the military.
HOW DO I REGISTER?
To register, you need to be an MISD student and in good standing with the Club. Basically, you stop by the Club and fill out a Club Membership Application. Applications have to be turned into the Club. You can also get a Club Membership application from our web page at www.BeGreatEastTexas.com
